There’s an obvious but crucial difference between ‘cases’ and ‘deaths’, and it’s a difference which Lichfield’s MP, Michael Fabricant, seems content in ignoring. ‘Flattening the curve’ never at any point meant flattening the economy, but rather taking the strain off the NHS so that it could deal with cases more steadily. Mr Fabricant is the latest political representative in the area who has jumped on the bandwagon of those wanting no deaths regardless of the costs. The costs, however, are very serious – lost jobs, closed businesses, more suicides, social deprivation, untreated cancer and heart disease to name but a few. He claimed it would have been ‘highly irresponsible’ to vote against the lockdown measures, yet his ignorance to reality is the height of irresponsibility.
